After every workout, REN asks you to give an RPE score (Rate of Perceived Exertion) on a scale from 1 to 10. This simple score tells the app how hard the workout felt to you.
No Right or Wrong
RPE is your perception of effort. It’s not about hitting the “correct” number — it’s about being honest:
Did the session feel easy?
Did it feel like a tough grind?
Was it somewhere in between?
Both the app and your watch will accept any number you give. The important thing is consistency in your own perception over time.
How the Scale Works
The RPE scale in REN runs from 1 (very easy) to 10 (all-out effort).
Here’s how it connects to training intensities you might see in the app:
| Intensity | Color | RPE | How it Feels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking / 48% Pace | Grey (Recovery) | 1 | Extremely easy, like a stroll |
| 65% Pace / CS+60 | Blue (Endurance) | 4 | Comfortable, can hold a conversation |
| 75% Pace / CS+50 | Blue (Endurance) | 5 | Steady effort, slightly heavier breathing |
| CS+40 | Blue (Endurance) | 6 | Noticeable effort, sustainable for a while |
| AeT +5 / CS+30 | Green (Aerobic Threshold) | 7 | Challenging but controlled, starting to feel hard |
| CS+20 | Green (Aerobic Threshold) | 8 | Very demanding, holding this takes focus |
| CS+5 / CS+3 | Yellow (Threshold) | 9 | Almost max effort, very tough to sustain |
| VO (VO₂max) | Red (VO₂max) | 10 | Maximum effort, all-out, only possible for short bursts |
Why REN Uses RPE
It’s personal: Heart rate, pace, and power all vary with sleep, stress, temperature, and nutrition. RPE captures how your body really experienced the session.
It adapts your plan: REN uses your RPE scores to fine-tune your future workouts, ensuring you get the right balance of load and recovery.
It’s simple: You don’t need fancy data — just listen to your body.
Tips for Giving RPE
Don’t overthink — give the number that comes to mind first.
Compare to your past sessions: “Was today easier, harder, or the same as similar runs?”
Be consistent with your scale: your “7” today should mean roughly the same kind of effort as your “7” last week.
✅ Remember: There’s no right or wrong. Just tell REN how it felt. The more honest your feedback, the better your training plan adapts to you.
