Being ill or injured happens to every runner. When you tell REN you're sick or injured, we change your plan so you can rest properly and ease back in, rather than jumping straight back to where you left off. Here's what to expect.
How do I tell REN I'm sick or injured?
Go to Settings > Sick/Injured > switch the toggle on. When you're feeling better and no longer sick or injured, switch it off again.
What happens to my plan when I report being sick or injured?
It depends on how long you're out for. If it's a single day, that day becomes a rest day and your plan carries on almost as normal. If you're sick or injured for two or more days in a row, we count that as a proper break. You get extra rest days, then a gentle build-up back to your usual training.
What if I'm only sick or injured for one day?
That day becomes a rest day, and your normal plan returns the day after. We treat you as slightly less recovered at that point, so that session may be a bit easier than usual. After that, you're back to normal. If you report days that aren't next to each other, say Monday and Wednesday, Tuesday becomes a rest day too.
What if I'm sick or injured for two or more days in a row?
Here's how it works, counting from the last day you reported:
- Your sick or injured days: rest days.
- The next 3 days: rest days while you recover.
- Days 4 to 7: running comes back with limits. You'll only get easy and tempo runs, so no intervals, threshold or VO2max sessions. Each run is 60 minutes at most, your first run back is always an easy one, and no performance tests are planned.
- Day 8: still easy and tempo runs only, but the 60 minute limit is lifted.
- Day 9 onwards: back to your normal plan.
For example, if you're sick on Monday and Tuesday, you rest Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday through the following Tuesday are easy or tempo runs of up to 60 minutes. Wednesday is easy or tempo with no time limit. By Thursday you're back to normal training.
Why is my plan so easy after I was sick?
That's the build-up phase. If you reported two or more sick or injured days in a row in the last 8 days or so, your plan is limited to easy and tempo runs while you ease back in. Once the build-up is over, your normal plan returns.
Can I get my original plan back after being sick?
Your plan won't go back to exactly how it was before you were sick. If you keep training and giving feedback, though, REN quickly catches up to your current level and plans more workouts to match.
I was only sick for one day. Why didn't I get more rest days?
That's intentional. One day is treated as a short setback, so the extra recovery days and the build-up only start after two days in a row.
Do the runs I did while I was sick still count?
Yes. Anything you actually ran stays visible in REN and still "counts". The sickness rules only change what we suggest for your plan.
What if I have a race or activity planned?
Races and activities you've added yourself take priority over the sickness rest days, so they stay in your plan. Please listen to your body and only take part if you're well enough.
What if I report more sick days later on?
We count your recovery and build-up from the last stretch of two or more days in a row. Any single sick days after that are still rest days on their own.
Is there a holiday option?
Not at the moment. Please don't use the sick/injured toggle for this, as it adds rest days and a build-up period. Instead, mark no days as available for the time you're away and just miss any workouts that are already planned. If you'd rather keep some training going, do what you can, give feedback on those sessions and skip the rest. If a calibration test is planned while you're away, you can miss it too and REN will reschedule it for another time.
